In September 2008 I received my Doctorate from the Department of Communication at the University of Washington. I work in the CSSCR statistical software research labs as a consultant on campus here in Seattle in addition to designing New Media content for the Experimental Education Unit.

Current Research Interests

I traveled to Nunavik for my fieldwork research and lived in an Inuit community. My goal while there was to learn how communication technology (specifically social networking) can preserve traditional language and ways of life while still connecting users to the world. In my research, I combine my interview data and qualitative impressions with statistics from surveys and internet content analysis to create a mixed-methods portrait of an issue.

I speak English, French, and Japanese fluently and can communicate in basic Inuktitut.

My research interests include post-coloniality, New Media studies, applied linguistics, and the humanistic technological. More specifically, I work with developers coding towards communicative web technologies designed to preserve and empower marginalized language and cultural groups.

Just as I believe that biodiversity is a key component of sustainability and environmental preservation, I similarly believe in the cultural and linguistic diversity of media: print, audio, video, and Internet.

Languages and traditional ways of life are disappearing at an alarming rate. It is of the utmost necessity to use all tools at our disposal to preserve and enhance traditions beyond the mainstream.
